Vestibular Rehabilitation

We can provide a physiotherapist to see you at home and provide vestibular rehabilitation training. They will perform a thorough assessment including taking your medical history and looking at your posture, balance and the way you walk. There are also certain specialised tests that assess the coordination between your eyes and head. They will then devise you a treatment plan that will include exercises that improve the brains ability to work effectively again with the vestibular system in time reducing the symptoms you may be experiencing such as vertigo, dizziness, headaches, nausea and loss of balance.

What is vestibular rehabilitation?

Vestibular Rehab is a form of physiotherapy that uses specialist exercises to help retrain the brain to recognise and sort signals from your inner ear to work properly with your vision (eyes) and your proprioception (muscles and joints). The exercises will also help to make the balance system less sensitive to any movements that make your symptoms worse.

What are the benefits of vestibular rehab training?

  • Help you get back to activities you were doing before
  • Help reduce your risk of falling
  • Stop any symptoms of dizziness and unsteadiness
  • Help adaptation, compensation and habituation as described below

Does vestibular rehabilitation work?

Adaptation – makes the eye and ear reflex work properly and stimulates the balance part of your ear.

Compensation – the balance exercises will help reduce any loss of balance and unsteadiness by working on the posture, sensory system and vision.

Habituation – the exercises will require a lot of repeating and need to actually bring on the symptoms of dizziness or vertigo to help make your body used to working again as before without the symptoms.
